Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His life was essentially untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind through the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

But, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.

Stories of predators preying on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, read more Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
